The University of Minnesota's Interdisciplinary Informatics Program (UMII) will be a comprehensive, integrative, University-wide program encompassing health informatics, computational biology, systems biology, bioinformatics, and natural and computational sciences, as well as emerging fields.
Faculty will spend their time in this integrative and collaborative environment, but hold their tenure-home in one or more collegiate departments aligned with their professional expertise.
Faculty, post-doctoral fellows and graduate student clusters will work collaboratively in each of the areas as part of the core strength of the program and for research purposes. Individual faculty may contribute to more than one domain. We will recruit top talent in these areas, hiring 21 new interdisciplinary informatics faculty—half of them in the next two years—to join our team of leading informatics researchers.
We will seek to recruit both outstanding individuals and established research groups. As faculty are hired, the University will also invest in infrastructure, postdoctoral fellows, and staff. This will be a well-staffed and supported program, with administration, grants management, and graduate student assistance all supported within this major initiative.
Funding for UMII includes an institutional investment from the University, which includes a portion of the University’s Microsoft settlement.
